BIPAI Malawi operates the Baylor College of Medicine-Abbott Fund Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence (COE) in Lilongwe. It provides staff to support the pediatric ward at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, works in four busy government health centers in other areas of Lilongwe, and performs outreach across the country.
The team also supplies technical expertise to various HIV technical working groups of the Ministry of Health as they consider various policy issues and management guidelines related to pediatric HIV.
Working with Kamuzu Central Hospital
The COE serves as the outpatient pediatric HIV clinic for Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) and a pediatric referral center for the entire country. It is managed by the Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Malawi.
BIPAI Malawi supports government health facilities with physician services and mentorship as part of the Tingathe/PMTCT and MPHATSO outreach programs. Other special projects include Teen Club, the Grassroots Soccer initiative, an emergency care and triage project at the KCH Under 5 clinic and a provider initiated testing and counseling program on the pediatric wards.
The program also supports a very productive outreach program that yields approximately 800-1,200 patient encounters each month.
